John was a member, deacon and former board member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Smithfield. For the last 18 years he has served as the Commander of the Selma American Legion Post 141. He ended his military career at the Pentagon as a Senior Officer working in the office of the Secretary of Defense. He passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2019, in. In his thirty-year Army career, he was one of the very few to enlist as a private and rise to the rank of Full Colonel, being awarded the Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, several Presidential Citations and many other medals, awards and commendations. Colonel Reeder had a very illustrious military career, including jumping into Normandy with the 101st Airborne the night before the D-Day Invasion. Born Augin Springerton, IL to the late John Harrison and Minnie Spruell Reeder, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Ruth "Joni" Reeder who died October 8, 1991. Reeder, retired, age 91, died Monday morning at his home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association by visiting Colonel John H. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. As her time here on earth has come to an end, her memory will continue to live through the stories she shared, friendships she made, and the love she poured into this world.
